  65. Internet users can now access hundreds of sources of current
  66. government information from around the world -- Census data,
  67. Supreme Court decisions, world health statistics, company
  68. financial reports, weather forecasts, United Nations information,
  69. daily White House press briefings and much more. The Internet has
  70. become a rich resource for government information, in part
  71. because works produced by many government agencies are not
  72. eligible for copyright protection.
  73.  
  74. So, while government agencies have been criticized for not making
  75. more information available online, enterprising individuals and
  76. organizations have themselves made a wealth of sources available
  77. via the network. A growing number of government agencies too are
  78. beginning to establish systems that can be accessed remotely. You
  79. can now e-mail the President, and enactment by Congress last year
  80. of the Government Printing Office Electronic Information Access
  81. Improvement Act assures the U.S. government's role in
  82. distributing information electronically will increase. A variety
  83. of other proposals suggest that in the future, more and more
  84. information produced by state, local and international
  85. governmental organizations will also be available online,
  86. sometimes exclusively.

  88. In many cases, there are significant advantages to the sources
  89. accessible online over what can be found in the library or via
  90. other means. Internet resources are often more up-to-date than
  91. their paper counterparts. Frequently they can be searched by
  92. keyword. Sometimes they provide information simply not available
  93. in more traditional formats. A word of warning is necessary,
  94. though. Internet resources are constantly changing. What is
  95. available one minute may not be available the next. System
  96. addresses, source directories and file names are often changed
  97. without notice. Sometimes a remote system may be temporarily
  98. unavailable.

  100. This is the second edition of a guide to Internet sources of
  101. government information originally created for the students,
  102. faculty and staff of Temple University. The second edition
  103. includes more than 325 sources, two-thirds of which were not
  104. listed in the first edition. The sources listed are intended to
  105. provide the simplest and clearest route known to the information
  106. described. The preferred source is often a Gopher source because
  107. of the ease of using the Gopher software. Often, however, there
  108. are several sources for the same information. Some may allow more
  109. sophisticated file manipulation. Frequently files can be
  110. downloaded to your personal computer using a feature known as
  111. file transfer protocol (FTP).
  112.  
  113. When the source listed is a Gopher source, the instructions
  114. assume users can escape the local Gopher menu structure to
  115. connect directly to a remote Gopher. This can normally be done by
  116. issuing the Gopher command in combination with a remote system
  117. address from your system's ready prompt. Contact your local
  118. systems administrator if this doesn't work. Many files accessible
  119. via Gopher are also available using a Telnet command, but don't
  120. assume a Gopher source can be accessed via Telnet. Telnet sources
  121. usually require an account or password and are sometimes not
  122. intended for outside use.

  124. The second edition of this guide includes a few changes from the
  125. first. Because the new edition features many more sources than
  126. the first, sources in this edition are arranged by subject rather
  127. than alphabetically. Each source is listed in only one subject
  128. category. Sources that include information about a wide variety
  129. of subjects are usually included in one of three general
  130. categories that begin the list. Additional access points have
  131. also been added for many sources. Often in the first edition only
  132. a single access point was provided, typically a Gopher source. I
  133. now realize some Internet users do not have direct Gopher access,
  134. so I have supplied Telnet addresses when known. Instructions for
  135. retrieving files via FTP are generally not provided unless the
  136. information is otherwise unavailable. System addresses, source
  137. directories and file names for all sources have been verified at
  138. least twice. I have added in parenthesis the date I last accessed
  139. the source using the information provided.

  141. The "path" listed is the "address" of the remote computer system
  142. where the information described can be found, along with the
  143. steps a user must take to locate the particular directory or file
  144. that contains the information. Slashes in the path separate
  145. commands, steps, or levels in a menu or file hierarchy.
  146. The first part of any path is a command statement that must be
  147. executed to access the remote source of the information. Type the
  148. first part of the path, up to any slashes, and press the Enter
  149. key. If there are no slashes, type the entire phrase.

  2988. This guide was compiled primarily for librarians who provide
  2989. reference assistance for U.S. Government Documents and contains
  2990. Internet sites which may assist in providing reference service for
  2991. library patrons who need government information.
  2992.  
  2993. A word about gophers; if I know the telnet address and password for
  2994. a gopher I have included login instructions.  However, I recommend
  2995. you "point your gopher client" to a gopher instead of using telnet. 
  2996. This not only facilitates login but is also easier to use.  In
  2997. addition, Mosaic and WAIS software is becoming more available and
  2998. user friendly.  I have included Mosaic (http) directions when I
  2999. know the address and will continue to adapt this guide to emerging
  3000. technologies.  Your computing services can provide you with
  3001. information on your institution's technical capabilities.

  3003. There are a number of gophers which provide pointers to U.S.
  3004. Government Gophers.  This is an good method to find federal
  3005. information on the Internet.  An excellent collection of U.S.
  3006. Government Gophers can be found at  peg.cwis.uci.edu.  Calvin Boyer
  3007. of the University of California at Irvine maintains this list which
  3008. is the best collection of U.S. Government gophers I have seen.  I
  3009. would recommend you add this site to your gopher bookmarks.

  4453. widespread dissemination via the FAQ structure, and act as a
  4454. `sponsor' knowledgable in the submissions process. This document is
  4455. being distributed under this arrangement.

  4458. lists and are valuable enough to deserve wider distribution. If you
  4459. know of an existing compilation of Internet information that is not
  4460. currently a FAQ, please contact us and we may `sponsor' it. The
